WEIR GULCH GARDENS COMPOST BUDDIES PROGRAM!
Nearly 40% of our waste stream in Colorado is comprised of organic materials like food scraps and yard waste, which could be used to create compost - a highly valuable soil amendment. Instead, these materials often head to the landfill where they emit methane gas as they attempt to break down in an oxygen-free environment. Did you know it can take a head of lettuce 25 years to break down in the landfill? To learn more about food waste check out the NRDC Food Waste Program.
Weir Gulch Gardens is working to keep these valuable materials out of the landfill with our new initiative, Compost Buddies!
Two ways to participate...
Backyard Composting Buddies
Compost Buddies aims to connect residents who have materials to compost, like yard waste, manure and food scraps, with other neighbors who already have a backyard compost pile (or are interested in starting one). Neighbors can work together to maintain the pile and come to an agreement on how to share the resulting compost product. We will pair neighbors up based on proximity, type of materials, and capacity of the compost pile.

Collection Service Sharing Buddies
This program also helps connect neighbors who may be interested in splitting the cost of a paid compost collection service - typically $25-35/month for one composting bucket. Splitting the cost of a bucket aims to make this type of service more affordable and accessible for residents. Once you are paired up with a neighbor to split the cost of a collection service, you will receive a list of companies that service the area and can work with your Compost Buddy and our Compost Coordinators to determine the company, service and pricing that is right for you. WGG has partnered with Scraps Mile High to offer collection service in our neighborhood; see below for more info. (Please note: the cost of this service is not covered by our program; residents are responsible for covering the cost of service.)
Scraps Mile High Partnerships
We have exciting news! We have partnered with Scraps Mile High to offer compost collection services in our neighborhood starting January 2021. We need 25 people to commit to this for it to happen. It is $25/month for weekly pickup of a 6-gallon bucket - food scraps only. Keep in mind that we are working to pair neighbors up to share this service and split the cost, so if you would like to be paired up with your Compost Buddy, fill out this form!
If you are interested in signing up for compost collection, visit the Scraps Mile High page for the Weir Gulch Gardens neighborhood to get more info and pre-register.
